Battery FAQ's

What are the reasons for battery failure ?
It may have been under-charged or over-charged. Check your charging device periodically to ensure that it is working properly. Also, follow the details mentioned in the warranty card supplied with your battery. If you are any doubt, contact your nearby service station.
Do i need to add water to my battery?
In case of flooded lead acid (Tubular) batteries Periodic top-up to be done with battery grade (de-mineralised) water conforming to IS: 1069 at the time of charging only.
What is the shelf life of battery?
During storage, batteries gradually go in to self discharge stage due to unavoidable internal chemical reaction of electrodes. If the capacity loss due to self-discharge is not compensated for by recharging, the battery capacity may become irrecoverable. Temperature also plays an important role in determining the shelf life of a battery. Batteries are best stored at 25°C. When batteries are stored in areas where the ambient temperature varies, self-discharge can be greatly increased. Check the batteries every month and charge if necessary.
How the battery life ends?
When the active material in the plates can no longer sustain a discharge current, a battery "dies / ages". Normally a battery dies as the active positive plate material sheds (or flakes off) due to the normal expansion and contraction that occurs during the discharge and charge cycles. This causes a loss of plate capacity and brown sediment, called sludge or "mud," that builds up in the bottom of the case can short the plates of a cell out. This will kill the battery as soon as the short occurs. In hot climates, additional causes of failure are positive grid growth, positive grid metal corrosion, negative grid shrinkage, buckling of plates, or loss of water. Deep discharges, heat, vibration, fast charging, and overcharging all accelerate the "aging" process. Approximately 50% of premature battery failures are caused by the loss of water due to the lack of maintenance, evaporation from high under-hood heat, or overcharging. Positive grid growth and undercharging causing sulfation also cause premature failures.
How to increase the life of battery?
The most important consideration in increasing the overall service life of a lead-acid battery is preventive maintenance.

Protecting your battery from high temperatures with a heat shield or case, keeping it full charged at all times, and maintaining it are the easiest ways to extend it's life. In hot climates and during summer, the electrolyte levels need to be checked more frequently. For every increase of 18° F (10° C) above 77° F (25° C), positive grid corrosion or self-discharge rate is doubled.

Periodically check the State-of-Charge of batteries. Based on charging systems sometimes it will undercharge the battery causing an accumulation of lead sulfate known as sulphation. This suphation reduces the capacity of the battery. If the battery is not fully charged, recharge it periodically with an external battery charger matched to the battery type.

Reducing the average DoD (Depth-of-Discharge) and the number of discharge/charge cycles, by proper deep cycle battery or battery bank sizing will significantly increase a deep cycle battery service life.

If required, give periodic equalizing charge. Equalizing can also prevent electrolyte stratification, which can cause sulphation.

In cold climates, increasing the diameter of the battery cables will reduce the voltage loss.

Never discharge any 12-volt lead-acid battery below 10.5 volts because it can damage the battery.

What are the common causes of premature battery failures?
The most important consideration in increasing the overall service life of a lead-acid battery is preventive maintenance.

For lead acid batteries, lack of preventive maintenance, high temperature, fast recharging or overcharging causes a loss of water, which accounts for over 50% of the failures.

Sulfation from undercharging, electrolyte stratification (especially in taller batteries), using tap water, excessive temperatures, or prolonged periods of non-use account for approximately 85% of the deep cycle battery failures.

Battery post or terminal corrosion, which cause charging and discharging problems.

Misapplication, for example, using a starting battery in a deep cycle application, a motive deep cycle battery instead of a stationary for a UPS, or an undersized battery (or battery bank) that causes discharges greater than the battery was designed for or will not produce enough capacity.

How do I take preventive measures for the batteries:
Does:

Check battery water level in every six months.

Use DM/Distilled water only for topping up at charging stage only

Use petroleum jelly at the time of installation and servicing stage for battery end terminals.

Put batteries in well Ventilated areas.

Do proper cable connection as per polarity and ensure adequate tightening of terminals.

Do Not:

Never put any metallic objects near or over the battery.

Never use tap water to the battery for topping up.

Never add any type of acid other than specified.

Never put extra load other than specified on inverter.

Keep battery away from inflammable material.

Do not apply grease on the battery terminal.

How can I be assured my Batteries are always fully charged?

Keep the UPS on (and the inverter running) and the UPS will automatically keep the batteries charged.

If the UPS is in storage awaiting deployment, turn on the UPS every 3 months, start the inverter (by depressing the Load On/Off button), and let the UPS charge the batteries for 24 hours.

It is best to order the Battery Pack so that they will be received just prior to installation. This will minimize your storage requirements (and the required charging tasks).

If the UPS has been run on battery and the batteries discharged, please turn the UPS back on when utility AC power is restored (and the inverter turned on) so the batteries can be recharged before next usage.

Is it OK to leave the Battery pack discharged?
Absolutely not. If you storing a Battery Pack in the discharged state, you will increase the risk that the battery will be damaged by the subsequent self-discharge.
How long does it take to recharge the Battery?
This is dependent on the depth of discharge and the rate of the charger. As a good rule of thumb, please allow 12 hours for charging for a typical Battery Pack. 24 hours to completely and fully charge a pack should always be adequate.
